It’s hard to believe it’s been twenty years since The Fifth Element was released but we’re constantly being reminded about it this month because Luc Besson’s Valerian is increasing its marketing campaign by the day. A third trailer dropped yesterday and it looks like this film is going to be either a massive blockbuster or a massive bust. I feel like there’s going to be no in between with this film. With a budget that became the highest in French film history, there’s plenty riding on this movie.
But when it comes down to it, ultimately people are going to be comparing it to Besson’s classic The Fifth Element. It was a sci-fi masterpiece that was way ahead of its time and people are more than likely going to be looking for the same thing in Valerian. So far the trailer have been excellent and the movie looks like a visual wonder. However, it’s going to come down to acting and directing as films always do.
